General Meeting:  May 15, 2012

Our pianist, Colin Glover being in absentia we got off to a shakey start with Past President Paul Fogh-Dohmsmidt leading us in an acapella version of O Canada.   Paul filled in as meeting chairman for new President Maury Van Vliet who had just undergone a knee operation and was hors de combat.  Then it was yours truly with the Toast to the Queen and Ron Campion with grace.

Following supper we had a presentation by Tom Arnold of Victoria Hospice.  Tom’s focus is fund raising for the hospice’s end of life care programs and activities.  The objective, of course, is to help patients get the most possible out of their remaining time.

Victoria Hospice has over 400 volunteers and could not operate without them.  They do everything from serve tea and toast to bathing patients and helping with meals.  Volunteers enjoy their work and rarely leave.

The hospice has a 17 bed unit in Royal Jubilee Hospital including one respite care bed for caregivers.  Patients may come for short stays for acute pain remediation which allows them to return home for a

time or for longer term care.  Services include pet therapy, bedside singers and visiting at any time of day or night.  With an emphasis on dignity patients can decide for themselves what kind and how much intervention they want.  Counsellors help patients prepare their estates if desired.  Families may receive grief counselling for up to a year after the passing of a loved one.

Victoria Hospice is known worldwide for its leadership in palliative end-of-life services.

Funding for Victoria Hospice is 55% from government and 45% from the community.

Colm Foy thanked Tom for his presentation.

Other business:

  • Gyro Officers – attached is a current list of Gyro Officers courtesy of Dave Bartlett.
  • We’re happy to welcome  new member Mark Gillis and his Gyrette, Diana, to our membership.
  • We’re also pleased to welcome transferees Mike Wedekind and his Gyrette, Gail Cleveland, from the Coachella Valley Gyro Club in Palm Springs.
  • The executive has decided to turn the magnificent steeds from the Installation Weekend’s Saturday event out to pasture, their job being well and nobly completed.  Has anyone got any thoughts as to who might be entrusted with their care?  If so – notify Maury.
  • Past President Paul Fogh-Dohmsmidt reported that the Royal Roads Gyro Marketing Plan was discussed at length at the District IV Interim in Vernon. How the plan is to be implemented remains a bit of a question.
  • Now here’s something newsworthy.  The clubs represented at the Interim held a contest to determine which club had the best Moose Milk recipe.  You’ll never guess who won! (unless you were at the last meeting.)  None other than our own talented milkmeisters!

Okay – well we passed on fines for this occasion.  I’m not sure why. Perhaps because most of those in attendance took advantage of the spring moratorium on ties.

The wine draw went forward as usual and the Lucky Winos were:

  • Court Haddock
  • Hedley Goldsworthy
  • Colm Foy
  • Peter Daniels
  • Denis Moffatt
  • Stew Murray – no, really!

Gerry Neely and Bill McColl provided some closing levity.

Until next time. . . .

Installation Weekend, April 27 – 29, 2012

Ninety – some folks in western attire (mostly) invaded the home of Margaret and Keith Spacey on Friday evening, April 27th for the opening round of Installation Weekend festivities.  The weather kept us inside so it’s a good thing their house had the necessary capacity.  A great time was had by all.

Food, courtesy of Jane Fogh-Dohmsmidt, was truly exceptional!  What a party!

The Saturday Gala at Uplands Golf Club was decorated by Diane Read and her team.  Les Wood received his 40th year pin.  New executive was installed.  Music ‘n’ dancin’.

Sunday Moosemilk  breakfast at the Camerons’ spread was a right  enjoyable finish to the weekend.

Bulletin for April 15, 2012

Next Meeting:  May 15th, 2012

Announcements:

·        Installation Weekend  is April 27 -29.  Friday night’s at Dr. Spacey’s house.  It’s a party.  People have fun.  Some people help clean up. Saturday night’s at Uplands Golf Club.  It’s a dress up party. People come about 6:00 o’clock and drink and talk to each other until about 7:00 o’clock .  Then they’re supposed to sit at the tables and get ready for dinner.  Sunday morning is called Moosemilk.  I don’t know why but it’s at Dr. Cameron’s, usually about 9:00 in the morning.  People eat until around noon and then go home.  I think they drink a bit at Moosemilk too, sometimes.  Some people usually help clean up.  Guys do a lot of planning for Installation Weekend and quite a few wives help too.

·        District Interim is May 11-13 in Vernon, BC.  It’s an even bigger party.  All the clubs can go to it if they want.

·        Nanaimo had their Installation Weekend the week before last.  Some guys from the Camosun Club went and took their wives.  They said it was pretty good.

·        There is no General Meeting on May 1st.  That’s because of the Installation Weekend.  Guys would get too tired.

·        The next general meeting will be May 15th.

General Meeting: April 17, 2012

Mr. Glover played O Canada on the piano and guys sang.  Then Mr. Goble had toast.  Then Mr. Whelan spoke to Grace.  Then we got dinner.

The meeting was called the Annual General Meeting.  They also call it the AGM ‘ cause it’s easier.  Guys make reports.  Reports are good.  Reports are important.  Some guys didn’t come to the AGM.  They didn’t hear the reports.  Too bad for them!  Tsk! Tsk!

Mr. Whelan read the minutes of last year’s AGM.  Minutes say what you already did but maybe you forgot.  Anyway they voted on the minutes and said they passed.  They must have been OK.

Then came the reports:

·        Mr. Goble reported about the Christmas Party for grown ups only.

·        Mr. Frolek reported about the Fall Ball and the committee that picks guys to run the club.

·        Mr. Elford reported about the guys’ trip to the airplane factory and the Christmas Party for the children of the guys and their families.

·        Mr. Somers reported about the golf game he set up for the guys and their wives.  He said Mrs. Frolek and Mr. Bradley got prizes ‘cause they won some contests.

·        Mr. Whelan said he’d like to play secretary again next  year.

·        Mr. Fray said we have enough money to keep having dinners twice a month, and parties.  He also  said he’d like to be Treasurer again next year.

·        Dr. Read reported about the Installation Weekend.   He’s the boss of it this year.

Then he reported about the nominating committee.  He said it’s a hard job getting guys to be bosses to lead the club.  He said the Chinese people say you have to know what direction you’re travelling in or you’ll end up where you’re going, even if it isn’t where you want to be.  Something like that.  Anyway, he wasn’t smiling when he said it.

·        Mr. Skene got up and said that Gyro International is thinking about having a convention on a cruise ship in the Caribbean!  He calls it a lack of reality.  It sounds quite serious.

Then the President of the club spoke.  His name is Paul Fogh-Dohmsmidt.  He’s a big guy.  Big Pauly.

He reported that guys who run Gyro  International wrote a letter to our club to say they

understand that we are worried about what’s going to happen to all the Gyro Clubs.  So Mr. Fogh-Dohmsmidt thinks we should be quiet for awhile and see if they make things better.   Then we’ll decide if we’re going to write another letter to them.

President Fogh-Dohnsmidt also talked about the hard time we have getting guys to run our own club.   We really need guys to be leaders, he said.  It’s lucky for us that some guys said they would do most of the jobs next year.  Whew!

See what you missed if you didn’t come to the AGM?  Tsk!  Tsk!  You should come next year for sure!

Other business:

  • Mr.  Boult said Mrs. Parrott was 91 on April 17th and Mrs. Horwitz would be 95 on the 19th.

They’ve already had their birthdays.

  • He told us some other things, too, but they don’t have to be in the bulletin.
  • Mr. Phillips is having an operation on his knee today.  He’s at Royal Jubilee Hospital.

Wine Draw:

Some guys bought tickets to win a bottle of wine.

Here’s the names of the guys that won:

Mr. McColl

Mr. Bowers

Dr. Cox (he wins a lot!)

Mr. Doell

Mr. Foy

Mr. (Les) Wood

Jester:

Jester means a guy that tells jokes.  Mr. Boult is the Jester for the Camosun Gyro Club.  He seems to be a funny guy although I didn’t really understand very much of what he said.  Guys laughed so I guess they thought he was funny.

That’s about all I can think of for now.  Next time there will be some different names at the top of the first page.  Some will be the same but in different places.

Bibi.
